President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to Japan concluded today, September 30, following an invitation from the Japanese government. The visit focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in development, trade, investment, economic collaboration, and regional security, aiming to strengthen long-term relations between Japan and Sri Lanka.
Key Meetings and Agreements
During his visit, President Dissanayake held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo. He was warmly received at the Prime Minister's Office with ceremonial honors. Several agreements were signed during the meetings, reflecting the commitment of both countries to expanding cooperation in various sectors. Key areas of collaboration include:
Dairy Industry Development: Launching projects to increase productivity in Sri Lanka’s dairy sector.
Security Cooperation: Implementing official programs to enhance security measures.
Economic Cooperation and Debt Management
Prime Minister Ishiba appreciated Sri Lanka’s progress under the IMF-supported reform and debt restructuring program and reaffirmed Japan’s continued support. President Dissanayake expressed gratitude to Japan for its role as Co-Chair of the Committee of Creditors and for initiating bilateral debt restructuring with Sri Lanka.
Major Projects and Assistance
Bandaranaike International Airport: Agreement reached to resume the second phase of development.
Television Digitalization and Telecommunications: Plans to continue ongoing projects.
Maritime Surveillance: Enhancement of maritime capabilities with the provision of 10 unmanned vessels funded by Japan, valued at over Rs. 1 billion.
Investment and Governance Initiatives
President Dissanayake briefed Prime Minister Ishiba on improvements in Sri Lanka’s business and investment environment and encouraged Japanese companies to explore new opportunities. Japan reaffirmed its support for Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption initiatives.
Regional Cooperation
Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation within the framework of the Indo-Pacific Vision, emphasizing international maritime law and shared democratic values.
The visit is expected to provide a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s economic development and regional cooperation, paving the way for future collaborative projects between the two nations.
