In a remarkable unveiling in Sri Lanka’s capital, a breathtaking 3,563-carat Purple Star Sapphire has been showcased, believed to be the largest of its kind documented. Dubbed the “Star of Pure Land,” this extraordinary gemstone is captivating attention globally due to its unparalleled size and distinctive characteristics.
Crafted into a flawless round form, the gem displays a captivating six-rayed asterism—a star-like feature that emerges when light refracts across its surface. This unique aspect distinguishes it from other star sapphires. Renowned gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe stated, “This is the largest purple star sapphire ever found, showcasing a distinctly defined six-ray star.”
Unearthed in 2023 from a gem pit in Rathnapura, celebrated as the “city of gems” in Sri Lanka, the sapphire was acquired along with other precious stones. Following nearly two years of analysis, its extraordinary value and rarity were confirmed, with certification from two independent gemological institutions.
The owners, who prefer to remain unnamed for security reasons, have appraised the sapphire’s worth between $300 million and $400 million, as per evaluations from global specialists. Sri Lankan sapphires are highly esteemed for their vibrant colors, clarity, and natural luster, enhancing the gemstone’s prominence.
With the “Star of Pure Land” now poised for sale, it is anticipated to become a coveted historical piece for collectors and investors alike.
