Sharjah, United Arab Emirates –  While the spotlight has often been on Abu Dhabi and Dubai for their visionary projects, Sharjah is quickly establishing itself as a vital center for healthcare research and innovation. This noteworthy evolution is being driven by the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SPARK), previously known as SRTIP, which is transforming the region's medical R&D landscape.

The Emirate highlighted its rising influence at the significant “Sharjah Next: Healthcare” event. More than a mere conference, this forum acted as an active platform for international collaboration, uniting prominent figures such as Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, a leading cardiothoracic surgery expert; Professor Humaid Obaid Al-Shamsi, a renowned Emirati oncologist; and Dr. Vladimir Ivkovic from Harvard Medical School.

“Sharjah Next: Healthcare was created to establish an international arena for dialogue, innovation, and teamwork,” stated Hussain Al Mahmoudi, the CEO of SPARK. “Our aim is to connect global expertise with local opportunities, ensuring that the innovations born in Sharjah positively impact health and wellbeing worldwide.”

This forum symbolizes SPARK's objective to connect groundbreaking lab discoveries with practical healthcare applications. Participants delved into advanced fields like neuroscience, AI-based diagnostics, space medicine, and biotechnology, creating a collaborative space for researchers, clinicians, startups, and policy makers.

Further asserting Sharjah’s dedication to transformative healthcare research, HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, declared a generous $2 million grant for the revolutionary “Magdi Yacoub Valve” project. This innovative initiative facilitates the human body to develop living heart valves, showcasing the cutting-edge projects fostered at SPARK.

SPARK operates under a triple-helix model involving government, industry, and academic alliances. Key partnerships formed during the forum include an MOU with Boehringer Ingelheim, allowing SPARK researchers to utilize the company’s open-innovation platform, ‘OpnME’, and a master research agreement with Aster DM Healthcare aimed at advancing medical technology and AI diagnostics.

More than just a research facility, SPARK represents a unified ecosystem. It offers researchers and investors access to state-of-the-art resources such as the SoiLab prototyping and manufacturing hub, comprehensive regulatory support, and global partnerships, firmly establishing Sharjah as an elite hub for medical innovation.
