Somali Capital Café Explosion Kills At Least 5, Police Report

A deadly explosion rocked Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least five people and injuring around 20 others. The incident occurred outside a café where patrons had gathered to watch the European soccer final between Spain and England. Somali police spokesman Maj. Abdifitah Aden Hassa confirmed that the explosion was caused by a car loaded with explosives detonating near the café.

Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos and horror, describing how some of the café's patrons were injured while trying to escape the blast. Images from the scene depicted a fire blazing outside the café in the aftermath of the explosion, highlighting the severity of the attack.

The responsibility for the bombing remains unclear, although such acts of violence are often attributed to the Islamic militant group al-Shabab. Al-Shabab has been engaged in a long-standing insurgency against Somalia's federal government and has frequently targeted civilians in Mogadishu and other parts of the country.

The bombing comes shortly after another violent incident in Mogadishu on Saturday, where inmates at a local prison attempted a daring jailbreak. During the unrest, at least eight people were killed as convicted members of al-Shabab engaged in a firefight with prison guards.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has vowed to intensify the government's efforts against al-Shabab, declaring a "total war" against the extremist group. The Somali government, supported by African Union troops and occasionally by US airstrikes, has been striving to wrest control of territories held by al-Shabab in central and southern Somalia.

Despite periods of relative calm, such as the recent months preceding these attacks, the incidents underscore the persistent security challenges faced by Somalia. The government's ongoing offensive against al-Shabab aims to restore stability and security to the war-torn nation, where militant groups continue to pose a significant threat to peace and civilian life.
