As the holiday season peaks, Americans are gearing up for Cyber Monday, the online shopping extravaganza that promises the deepest deals of the year. This year, shoppers are expected to spend a record $14.2 billion online, reflecting a 6.3% rise compared to 2024, according to recent industry estimates.
The five-day Cyber Week, spanning Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, has already witnessed strong consumer engagement. Online spending reached $11.8 billion on Black Friday and $6.4 billion on Thanksgiving, surpassing earlier projections. Deals on electronics and apparel are expected to peak at discounts of 30% and 26%, offering incentives for shoppers hunting for holiday bargains.
While consumers are drawn by discounts, higher retail prices and inflationary pressures may also contribute to the soaring sales. The ongoing economic uncertainty, including concerns over job security and lingering effects from government disruptions, has not deterred Americans from splurging on gifts and essentials.
Mobile shopping continues to dominate, with smartphones, wearables, and other handheld devices accounting for more than half of online sales this season — an estimated $142.7 billion. In contrast, desktops once led online purchases five years ago, marking a clear shift toward handheld convenience.
Buy now, pay later options are also reshaping holiday spending habits. Adobe predicts these plans will fuel $20.2 billion in online purchases this year, an 11% increase over last year, with Cyber Monday alone expected to surpass $1 billion in such transactions.
The hottest items this year include the latest gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2, fashion-forward toys such as Labubu Dolls, and flagship smartphones including the iPhone 17, Google Pixel 10, and Samsung Galaxy S25. AI-powered shopping tools and digital assistants are further influencing buying patterns, enhancing the speed and personalization of online purchases.
Cyber Monday, now in its 20th year since being coined by the National Retail Federation in 2005, has expanded beyond a single day. Sales momentum continues throughout the week as retailers ride the holiday hype, making it a crucial period for both consumers and businesses alike.
