A tragic shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky, on Tuesday has left one student dead and another in critical condition, just days ahead of winter break.

Authorities have arrested a 48-year-old man from Indiana, who is not affiliated with the university, and charged him with first-degree murder and assault. He is currently in custody at the Franklin County Regional Jail.

The critically injured student is reportedly in stable condition, and officials have indicated that the shooting was not premeditated.

All academic classes, exams, and campus activities have been canceled for the remainder of the week. Students are permitted to return home, with further updates expected from the university administration.

Campus police were quick to respond, apprehending the suspect shortly after the initial shots were fired. Local law enforcement confirmed that the area was secured rapidly, posing no ongoing threat.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear labeled the incident as an isolated case targeting the historically Black institution, located roughly 25 miles northwest of Lexington.

This marks the 73rd school shooting across the U.S. in 2023, based on nationwide statistics. Kentucky State University, which was founded in 1886, has a student body of over 2,200 and employs around 450 faculty members.

The event unfolded around 3:10 p.m. near the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall. Names of the victims have not been disclosed to respect their privacy. The university has set up counseling and support services for affected students and staff.

University President Koffi C. Akakpo condemned the shooting as a "senseless tragedy" and called for prayers for all those affected.

Law enforcement commended the swift and coordinated efforts of campus, local, and federal agencies that helped minimize further danger.

This devastating incident is part of a concerning trend of violence occurring at historically Black colleges and universities, alongside recent events at Howard University and Lincoln University.
