Sharjah’s Hajar Mountains have revealed a hidden marvel of nature. Scientists from the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) have documented a new and rare ant species, named Carebara Sharjahensis, or the “Sharjah Ant.” This discovery is the first record of the Carebara genus in the UAE and only the third known species of its kind in the Arabian Peninsula.
The breakthrough came from detailed field surveys in Wadi Shees, conducted by Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf from EPAA’s Al Dhaid Wildlife Center. Despite repeated visits, only a single “soldier” ant specimen was found, suggesting that the species lives in highly specialised subterranean habitats, making it exceptionally elusive.
Experts note that the Sharjah Ant has distinctive features that set it apart from other species. It displays well-developed lateral horns on both sides of its head, fine sensory hairs, a uniform yellow body color, and unique structural traits in the head and thorax. Interestingly, it shows partial resemblance to a species from Zimbabwe but possesses enough differences to classify it as a distinct species.
The discovery underscores Sharjah’s commitment to biodiversity research and environmental monitoring. The Hajar Mountains, already recognised as one of the UAE’s richest ecological regions, continue to reveal rare and endemic species that enhance the emirate’s natural heritage. Researchers are continuing their efforts to locate other members of the colony, including queens, males, and workers, which are believed to dwell beneath the soil and among decomposing organic matter.
This rare finding not only highlights the ecological significance of the Hajar Mountains but also positions Sharjah as a growing hub for specialised scientific research in the region.
