Sharjah is once again set to become the center of cricketing excitement as the Bank Alfalah T20I Tri-Series kicks off this Friday. The tournament features three teams – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and hosts UAE. But the spotlight will be firmly on the clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan, two sides that have developed a heated cricket rivalry over the past decade in the UAE.
The series comes at an important time, as both teams are using this tournament to prepare for the upcoming Asia Cup next month. For players, coaches, and fans, the Sharjah matches will serve as the final rehearsal before one of Asia’s biggest cricket tournaments.
Afghanistan’s Confidence Grows Under Rashid Khan
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan set the tone ahead of the first match, reminding everyone that T20 cricket is unpredictable. “There are no favourites in Twenty20 cricket,” he explained. “One or two players can change the whole match on a given day. For us, the goal is to give 200% effort, stay focused, and make the right decisions at the right time.”
Rashid’s words reflect how much Afghan cricket has evolved. Once seen only as a bowling-heavy team, Afghanistan has now built a powerful batting unit that can handle pressure. This was proven in the recent T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean, where Afghanistan shocked the world by beating strong teams like New Zealand, Australia, and Bangladesh before reaching the semi-finals.
The team’s rise is built around their batting order, which has started to take responsibility in big games. This new balance of fearless batting and world-class spin bowling has turned Afghanistan from outsiders into serious contenders.
Pakistan’s New Leadership Under Salman Agha
Pakistan, on the other hand, enter the series in a transitional phase. They have a new captain, Salman Agha, who is just 30 years old and leading an inexperienced side. Speaking before the tournament, Salman admitted that his team is still finding its rhythm. “We are a young team. Yes, we lack experience, but every match is a chance to learn and grow,” he said.
Despite the lack of senior players, Pakistan still has plenty of match-winners. Over the years, Pakistan has often played some of its best cricket in Sharjah, a venue with deep historical ties to the nation. Many legendary Pakistani performances have come on this ground, and Salman believes the team can once again find inspiration from that history.
Pakistan’s recent training camp in Dubai was designed to prepare the squad for tough matches. The new-look team may not have the same depth of experience, but it is hungry to prove itself.
Sharjah: A Historic Venue for Both Sides
The Sharjah Cricket Stadium has always been a special ground for both Pakistan and Afghanistan. For Pakistan, it has been a home away from home for decades, hosting countless victories and thrilling matches. For Afghanistan, the UAE has been their cricketing base for many years, where they played most of their early international games.
This shared history adds extra spice to the series. With large expat communities from both countries living in the UAE, the stadium is expected to be packed with passionate supporters. The crowd is likely to be divided, with green flags and Afghan colors creating a festival-like atmosphere.
Such fan presence always adds intensity, and both teams know they will be playing not just for themselves, but also for the pride of their supporters.

Why This Series Matters
Both Rashid Khan and Salman Agha agreed on one thing – the Sharjah series is not just about winning, it is about preparing for bigger challenges.
* For Afghanistan, the aim is consistency. They want to build on their World Cup success and show the world that they are not just a one-time surprise but a team that can challenge the best regularly.
* For Pakistan, the goal is to nurture young talent and give the players exposure to high-pressure situations before the Asia Cup.
Fans can expect matches filled with high energy, close finishes, and moments of brilliance, because in T20 cricket, one over can change everything.
Looking Ahead
As the cricketing world watches Sharjah, this tri-series will not only give us entertaining games but also reveal how ready Pakistan and Afghanistan are for the Asia Cup and the packed international calendar ahead.
With Rashid Khan’s leadership, Afghanistan look like a team full of belief. With Salman Agha’s new captaincy, Pakistan look like a team hungry to rebuild. And with UAE playing at home, the hosts will also look to make an impression.
The stage is set. The fans are ready. Sharjah is about to witness another chapter in the Pakistan-Afghanistan cricket rivalry – and it promises to be unforgettable.
