FERC Approves 5-Year Extension for Cameron LNG Project

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has given Sempra Energy a significant boost, approving a five-year extension to complete its Cameron LNG export facility in Louisiana. The extension now allows the facility to be finished and operational by March 16, 2033.

Cameron LNG, majority-owned by Sempra Infrastructure, has been a pivotal asset in the U.S.’s rapid rise as the world’s top exporter of supercooled natural gas since 2023. The project has played a central role in meeting growing international demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and supporting domestic energy infrastructure.

The U.S. LNG sector has experienced renewed momentum following policy changes under the Trump administration, which lifted a moratorium on new export permits in early 2025. This shift has encouraged investment and development, positioning U.S. LNG projects to capture more of the global market.

Sempra’s extension request, filed last October, highlighted the complex engineering and regulatory challenges involved in constructing such a large-scale facility. The approval provides the company with crucial time to ensure the project meets safety, environmental, and operational standards without rushing completion.

Analysts note that this extension could help stabilize U.S. LNG supply, maintain export reliability, and support long-term contracts with international buyers, reinforcing America’s role in global energy markets.
