Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan is contemplating an early parliamentary election set for February, aiming to bolster her political mandate while public backing remains high. Dates like February 8 or February 15 are under consideration for the voting.
Since taking office as Japan’s first female prime minister in October, Takaichi's popularity has surged, driven by her strong national security policies. Her firm stance on regional security issues, especially concerning China and Taiwan, has struck a chord with conservative voters nationwide.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party, currently in coalition with the right-wing Ishin party, still lacks a clear majority in the lower house. An early election could provide the coalition with the mandate needed for more stable governance.
Ties between Japan and China have deteriorated significantly, particularly after Takaichi warned that any military action from China against Taiwan would pose a considerable risk to Japan's security. This statement has led to notable diplomatic tension between both nations.
In response, China has cautioned its citizens against visiting Japan, halted official exchanges, and restricted exports of items with potential military applications. These measures represent one of the most severe diplomatic rifts between the two countries in the last decade.
The speculation surrounding early elections has already affected financial markets, resulting in a decline in the Japanese yen against the US dollar.
If called, these elections could significantly influence Japan’s political landscape amidst escalating regional tensions and increasing global focus on East Asia.
