San Francisco Wildlife Officers Kill 3 Coyotes After Attack on 5-Year-Old Girl San Francisco authorities took swift action over the weekend following a coyote attack at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, where three coyotes were shot and killed by wildlife officers. Patrick Foy, spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, confirmed that two coyotes were euthanized on Saturday and another on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Friday when a 5-year-old girl, attending a supervised summer camp visit at the garden within Golden Gate Park, was bitten by a coyote while playing. The girl was promptly treated for her wound at a hospital, according to her mother, Helen Sparrow, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Foy emphasized the protocol for such incidents, stating, "If a coyote or any wild animal attacks a person, those animals are euthanized, and we conduct a rabies test on them post-mortem while taking DNA samples." Authorities retrieved a DNA sample from the girl's wound to identify the specific coyote responsible. Scientists are currently analyzing the sample to determine a match. If no match is found, additional measures such as trapping or further euthanization of coyotes may be necessary, Foy explained.

Following the incident, the San Francisco Botanical Garden was temporarily closed but reopened on Monday after safety assessments and wildlife management measures were conducted.

Describing the attack, Sparrow recounted how her daughter attempted to flee but was tripped and subsequently bitten on the buttocks by the coyote. Medical professionals treated the bite wound with stitches and administered a rabies vaccine, although the likelihood of coyotes testing positive for rabies is rare, as per the Chronicle.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding wildlife interactions in urban settings and the measures required to ensure public safety in areas shared with wild animals.
