Following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the awarding of a significant contract for the development of Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets. This initiative is part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project, aimed at enhancing infrastructure in response to the city’s urban growth and increasing population.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, has been closely overseeing the project. The Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project will connect Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street and provide direct exits to both Oud Metha and Al Nawras Streets.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the project's importance, highlighting that it includes the construction of four major intersections, 4,300 meters of bridges, and 14 kilometers of roads. This development is expected to serve several key residential and service areas, such as Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club, accommodating a projected population of over 420,000 by 2030.

One of the project's significant enhancements is the capacity increase of Oud Metha Street from 10,400 vehicles per hour to 15,600 vehicles per hour, a 50% improvement. Additionally, travel time on this route will be reduced from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes, marking a remarkable 75% decrease.

The first intersection to undergo upgrades is located at the junction of Oud Metha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street. This enhancement will include the addition of a left-turn lane for traffic from Oud Metha to Sheikh Rashid Street, increasing capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour. Improvements to the service road on Sheikh Rashid Street will also alleviate current traffic congestion and enhance road safety. The number of right-turn lanes from Sheikh Rashid Street to Dubai-Al Ain Road will be expanded from two to three, raising its capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour.

The second intersection, at the meeting point of Oud Metha Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Nawras Street, will feature the construction of two new bridges. The first bridge will have two lanes to accommodate 2,400 vehicles per hour for traffic heading from Al Asayel towards Al Nawras, while the second bridge will be three lanes wide, facilitating 3,600 vehicles per hour from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel. A dedicated left-turn bridge for Al Asayel to Oud Metha traffic will also be constructed, with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour. Additional road improvements will be implemented to enhance access to Al Wasl Club and streamline traffic flow at Al Nawras Street entrances and exits.

At the third intersection of Al Nawras Street and Al Khail Road, a two-lane bridge will be constructed to accommodate 3,000 vehicles per hour from Al Asayel Street toward Al Khail Road, continuing to Business Bay. Upgrades will also enhance Al Nawras Street's exit capacity toward Al Khail Road to two lanes, while a service road will be built on both sides to provide additional parking spaces.

The final intersection, located at the junction of Zabeel Palace Street, Al Khail Road, and Oud Metha Street, will see the addition of a left-turn ramp lane from Al Khail Road to Dubai-Al Ain Road, doubling capacity from 900 vehicles per hour to 1,800 vehicles per hour. A single-lane tunnel will also be constructed to handle 1,200 vehicles per hour from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Nawras Street, mitigating current traffic overlap. Moreover, the existing bridge that services traffic from Al Khail Road to Oud Metha will be expanded from two to three lanes, increasing its capacity from 2,200 vehicles per hour to 3,300 vehicles per hour.

The Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project represents one of the largest strategic road initiatives undertaken by the RTA. Previous phases have seen substantial developments along Ras Al Khor Road, from its intersection with Dubai-Al Ain Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This included constructing bridges spanning 2,000 meters and expanding Ras Al Khor Road from three lanes to six lanes in each direction, alongside the addition of a two-lane service road on either side.

These improvements have increased Ras Al Khor Road’s capacity to 10,000 vehicles per hour, reducing travel times from 20 minutes to just 7 minutes and significantly enhancing traffic flow and safety for an estimated 650,000 residents across several major development areas, including the Lagoons, Dubai Creek, Meydan Horizon, Ras Al Khor, Al Wasl, and Nad Al Hamar.
