Abu Dhabi Set to Host Global Meeting on Emergency Medicine Innovations

The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) is set to host the 6th World Health Organization (WHO) Global Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Meeting from November 5 to 7 in Abu Dhabi. This significant gathering is expected to attract global healthcare representatives from 110 countries.

The meeting aims to serve as a vital platform for showcasing the latest research and innovations in emergency preparedness systems and capabilities. It seeks to enhance the rapid and effective response to health emergencies at local, regional, and global levels. Emergency Medical Teams, organized and led by the WHO, consist of healthcare professionals who deliver essential life-saving care to individuals affected by disasters, disease outbreaks, armed conflicts, and other health crises.

This year's session will provide an opportunity for participants to review achievements outlined in the WHO's EMT strategy, share knowledge and research, and mobilize collective efforts to meet the strategy's objectives. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH, emphasized the importance of the Global Emergency Medical Teams Meeting on the global healthcare agenda. She noted that the event aims to ensure healthcare systems worldwide are adequately prepared for emergencies.

Dr. Al Ghaithi expressed her hopes of utilizing this opportunity to showcase the emirate's readiness to respond to various emergencies and to collaborate with partners to achieve the meeting’s goals, thereby enhancing the capabilities of emergency medical teams globally. She underscored the DoH's commitment to proactively addressing emerging emergencies by employing advanced technologies, developing the skills of staff, and anticipating future challenges.

To this end, the DoH has established four specialized emergency medicine teams in the emirate. These teams are responsible for managing the operations of a psychological support hotline, disinfecting hazardous materials, and responding to infectious diseases, epidemics, and injuries.

Dr. Nadert Emiroglu, Director of the Department of Strengthening Health Emergency Preparedness in Cities and Urban Areas at WHO, highlighted the significance of the Global Meeting of Emergency Medical Teams. She noted it as the most important event for the expanding network of emergency medical teams and their partners. The meeting fosters collective action and collaboration, which are crucial for strengthening the capabilities of medical teams worldwide and enhancing their potential for rapid intervention, thereby contributing to a more prepared global response to emergencies.

In light of the increasing frequency and complexity of public health emergencies—particularly those related to climate change—the need for building preparedness, response, and resilience has never been more critical. Dr. Emiroglu added that this global meeting in Abu Dhabi is the first of its kind in the region, representing a unique opportunity to highlight innovations, practical steps, and the extent of cooperation necessary to achieve the objectives of the Emergency Medical Teams Strategy 2030.
