King Charles Signals No Opposition to Australia’s Republic Movement

The British republican group Republic has traveled to Australia to stage protests against the monarchy during King Charles's upcoming visit. According to reports, King Charles has indicated that he will not interfere if Australia chooses to remove him as head of state. This stance reflects a non-confrontational approach towards the republican campaigners as he prepares for his visit later this month.

A report highlighted that Nathan Ross, the King’s assistant private secretary, communicated the monarch’s “deep love and affection” for Australia in response to a meeting request from the Australian Republican Movement (ARM). Ross emphasized that, as a constitutional monarch, King Charles acts on the advice of his ministers, making it clear that whether Australia becomes a republic is ultimately a decision for the Australian public.

The ARM has been advocating for Australia to transition to a republic with an Australian as its head of state. The last referendum on this issue took place in 1999, resulting in 54.9% of voters choosing to retain the monarchy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed his belief that “Australia should have an Australian as our head of state,” although he noted that a new referendum is not currently a priority.

A spokesperson from Buckingham Palace reiterated the King’s position, stating, “Like his mother before him, it has always been the case that his majesty the King feels that it is a matter for the Australian people.”

In Australia, Graham Smith, the head of Republic, voiced his sentiments regarding public interest in the monarchy, describing the general reaction to the King's visit as one of “indifference and disinterest.” He stated, “Most people are barely aware of the visit and couldn’t care less.” Smith expressed hope that the King’s presence would stimulate further discussions in both the UK and Australia about the monarchy’s relevance, arguing that the institution “doesn’t deserve respect or deference.”

This visit is particularly significant as it marks King Charles’s first major overseas tour following his recent cancer diagnosis and his inaugural trip to Australia in his capacity as its head of state. As the monarchy faces scrutiny and debate, the upcoming visit is likely to be a focal point for discussions on the future of Australia’s political system.
