Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized the enduring strength of the U.S. Constitution in his annual letter to the judiciary on Wednesday. Reflecting on a year marked by judicial turbulence, Roberts reiterated that the nation’s founding documents remain “firm and unshaken,” echoing a historic statement by President Calvin Coolidge.
This reassurance follows heightened concerns in 2025 about a potential constitutional crisis, fueled by conflicts between Republican President Donald Trump’s supporters and courts that challenged parts of his conservative agenda. In March, Roberts notably issued a rare public rebuke after Trump called for the impeachment of a judge who ruled against him in a deportation case involving Venezuelan migrants.
Roberts’ letter highlighted the judiciary’s historical role, recalling an early 19th-century ruling that established the principle protecting judges from removal due to unpopular decisions. He urged judges to uphold their oath by delivering justice impartially, “doing equal right to the poor and to the rich,” and faithfully applying the Constitution and laws of the United States.
Despite resistance in lower courts, the Trump administration achieved around two dozen victories on the Supreme Court’s emergency docket last year. The court’s conservative majority has permitted actions such as banning transgender individuals from military service, limiting federal spending authorized by Congress, advancing stricter immigration policies, and removing Senate-confirmed leaders of independent federal agencies.
However, the court also ruled against Trump in some cases, including a key decision blocking his efforts to deploy the National Guard to certain U.S. cities.
Looking ahead, the Supreme Court faces significant cases in 2026, including debates over Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship and the legality of his unilateral imposition of tariffs on multiple countries. Roberts’ letter largely avoided these contentious topics, instead beginning with a tribute to Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet Common Sense and closing with Coolidge’s call to find comfort in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence amid political turmoil.
