The Thai military has established a fortified presence within Cambodian borders, utilizing barbed wire and shipping containers to restrict access. This situation poses a threat to the existing peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which previously experienced two major conflicts last year. Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn has reported that around 4,000 families are currently barred from returning to their homes along the border due to the ongoing military presence, despite a ceasefire declared in December.
In remarks from Phnom Penh, Prak Sokhonn identified several specific areas where Thai soldiers have allegedly crossed into Cambodian territory. He expressed a desire for Thailand to adhere fully to the peace terms, stating that while the situation remains stable, elements of risk persist.
In response, the Thai military and government have refuted Cambodia's assertions, claiming their troops remain compliant with the stipulations of the ceasefire and are not in violation of territorial claims.
The prior clashes in December escalated to airstrikes, rocket fire, and heavy artillery use, a continuation of tensions stemming from July's hostilities, which subsided with interventions from U.S. President Donald Trump. The December confrontations resulted in 101 fatalities and displaced over half a million individuals from both nations, compounding an already convoluted border dispute.
Cambodia has appealed for a convening of the Joint Boundary Commission to address the ongoing border issues, but Thailand has yet to respond affirmatively. Prak Sokhonn stressed the urgency of addressing the matter of occupied villages to allow displaced residents to return.
According to Thailand's foreign ministry, they are poised to initiate discussions after the formation of the new government post-February 8 election. They reaffirmed their commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and expressed a desire to reconvene the Joint Boundary Commission promptly.
The peace agreement finalized on December 27 also mandated the cessation of troop deployments to the border and promised the safe return of displaced locals. Prak Sokhonn remarked on the extensive damage incurred during the conflicts, affecting lives and infrastructure including schools, temples, and roads.
While Trump's efforts were pivotal in halting the July aggression and reinforcing a ceasefire in October, immediate intervention in December's skirmish proved challenging. Alongside Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, China also played a role in peace endeavors, dispatching envoys to both nations in late December.
