Recognizing Excellence in Government Work

The Global Government Excellence Award highlights innovative government initiatives worldwide that help improve people’s lives and address important social challenges. It is the first international award of its kind, open to all countries and cultures, focusing on originality and long-lasting impact.

Among the winners was the ‘Ubongo’ digital learning programme from Tanzania, which won the Technological Innovation for Social Inclusion award. This programme provides digital content in subjects like maths, science, and languages while offering interactive tools for teachers. It aims to bridge educational gaps between urban and rural areas, giving children equal learning opportunities.

Another winner was the municipality of Cascais in Portugal, which received the award for Innovation in Environmental Sustainability and Community Engagement. Their ‘iRec’ recycling project encourages people to recycle by using smart devices and rewarding participants with points they can redeem for services. In just one year, the project collected one million packages, equal to 70 tonnes of waste, showing its success in promoting sustainability.

Encouraging Best Practices Worldwide

The selection process for the awards follows international standards to ensure that the best initiatives are recognized. The third edition saw a significant increase in the quality of nominations, wider global participation, and an expansion to include more winners from different continents. The goal of the award is to highlight governments that focus on improving people’s quality of life and inspire other nations to adopt innovative policies.

The Global Government Excellence Award was first launched at the World Governments Summit in 2023. It is now one of the most prestigious international awards, celebrating outstanding government initiatives and setting a benchmark for excellence.

The World Governments Summit serves as a major platform for shaping the future of governance. It also hosts several other global awards that celebrate excellence in government work. These include the Best Minister in the World Award, Creative Government Innovation Award, Government Technology Award, Global Government Excellence Award, and the Best Teacher in the World Award.

Through these recognitions, the summit continues to encourage governments worldwide to innovate, create impactful policies, and improve governance for a better future
