Starting February 1, 2026, air travel in the U.S. is set to cost more for passengers who don’t carry a REAL ID. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that travelers 18 and older without this federally compliant ID—or another approved form of identification—will face a $45 non-refundable fee.
The REAL ID, marked by a white star in a yellow circle on most state-issued licenses, has been mandatory since May, but until now, travelers could pass through security with extra screening and a warning. According to the Department of Homeland Security, around 94% of passengers are already compliant, and the new fee is aimed at encouraging the remaining travelers to obtain the ID.
Why the REAL ID Matters
The REAL ID was introduced after the September 11, 2001, attacks to enhance airport security. Obtaining it requires more documentation than standard state-issued licenses, including proof of identity, residency, and legal status.
For those without a REAL ID, TSA’s alternative “Confirm.ID” system will verify identities. Payment can be made online before arrival or at the airport, but the process may take up to 30 minutes. While the verification fee guarantees access to the program for a 10-day travel window, it does not automatically ensure approval—passengers who cannot be verified may be denied boarding.
Other Accepted IDs
Travelers who already hold federally accepted forms of identification—such as passports, military IDs, permanent resident cards, and photo IDs issued by federally recognized tribal nations—will not need to pay the fee. TSA also accepts digital IDs via Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet at over 250 airports across the U.S.
The Cost Change
Initially, the TSA proposed an $18 charge for non-REAL ID travelers, but the final fee of $45 reflects the higher operational costs of the alternative verification system.
With these changes, air travelers are advised to plan ahead, ensure they carry valid identification, and avoid unexpected delays or additional fees at U.S. airports.
