Ram Mandir: Nagara Architecture, 392 Pillars, 5 Mandaps

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, eagerly awaits the grand pran-pratishtha (consecration ceremony) of the newly constructed Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, marking a momentous occasion with profound cultural and symbolic importance. Set for Monday afternoon, the event has garnered global attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the ceremony.

Designed by architect Chandrakant B Sompura, the Ram Mandir exhibits distinctive features that honor traditional Indian architecture:

  • Architectural Style: The temple is crafted in the traditional Nagara style, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of India.
  • Dimensions: With a length of 380 feet, a width of 250 feet, and a height of 161 feet, the temple stands as an imposing structure in Ayodhya.
  • Three-Storied Structure: The temple comprises three stories, each 20 feet tall, creating a majestic presence.
  • Pillars and Doors: Supported by 392 pillars and adorned with 44 doors, the temple boasts intricate craftsmanship.
  • Sculpted Depictions: The pillars and walls feature intricately sculpted depictions of Hindu deities, gods, and goddesses, showcasing artistic excellence.
  • Main Sanctum Sanctorum: The main sanctum enshrines the childhood form of Bhagwan Shri Ram, known as Shri Ram Lalla. Additionally, the first floor houses a shrine dedicated to Shri Ram Darbar.
  • Mandaps: The temple comprises five halls, namely Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prathana Mandap, and Kirtan Mandap, each serving a specific purpose.
  • Main Entrance: Situated on the eastern side, the main entrance is accessed by ascending 32 stairs through the Singh Dwar.
  • Deity-Specific Mandirs: Four Mandirs dedicated to Surya Dev, Devi Bhagwati, Ganesh Bhagwan, and Bhagwan Shiv are positioned at the corners of the compound. Additionally, there are Mandirs for Maa Annapurna and Hanuman ji.
  • Foundation Stability: The temple's foundation is fortified by a substantial number of columns, with 160 columns on the ground floor, 132 on the first floor, and 74 on the second floor.
  • Accessibility Features: Ramps and lifts are incorporated into the design to ensure accessibility for differently-abled and elderly individuals.
  • Parkota: The rectangular compound wall, measuring 732 meters in length and 14 feet in width, surrounds the Mandir.
  • Historic Well: Near the main Mandir, a historic well named Sita koop dates back to ancient times. Kuber Tila houses the restored ancient Mandir of Bhagwan Shiv and the installation of Jatayu.
  • Construction Materials: The temple's construction emphasizes traditional materials, with Bansi Paharpur Pink Sandstone, granite, and Makrana marble contributing to its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
  • Environmental Considerations: The construction incorporates environmentally conscious practices, avoiding the use of steel or iron. It emphasizes water conservation, leaving 70% of the 70-acre area green.
  • Symbolic Bricks: Special bricks known as "Ram Shilas" with the inscription "Shri Ram" draw a symbolic parallel with the stones believed to have been used in the construction of Ram Setu, connecting modern craftsmanship with ancient symbolism.
  • Additional Mandirs: Proposed Mandirs within the complex are dedicated to Maharshi Valmiki, Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Nishad Raj, Mata Shabri, and the revered consort of Devi Ahilya.
  • Foundation Construction: A 14-meter-thick layer of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gives the appearance of an artificial rock, enhancing the foundation's robustness.
  • Infrastructure: The Mandir complex includes a sewage treatment plant, water treatment plant, water supply for fire safety, and an independent power station.
  • Pilgrims Facility Centre (PFC): A dedicated center with a capacity of 25,000 people is being constructed, providing medical facilities and locker facilities for pilgrims.
  • Traditional Technology: The temple is constructed entirely using traditional and indigenous technology, reflecting a commitment to Bharat's heritage.
  • Financial Investment: The estimated expenditure for the architectural marvel is ₹1,800 crore, with ₹900 crore spent between February 5, 2020, and March 31, 2023.

The Uttar Pradesh government, recognizing the significance of the event, has implemented heightened security measures in Ayodhya, deploying over 13,000 security personnel to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the mega temple event.
