The opening T20 International between New Zealand and England was abandoned on Saturday after persistent rain prevented play from resuming at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. England, who batted first, reached 153 for 6 in their 20 overs before heavy showers ended any hope of a result.
After being sent in to bat on a surface that offered unpredictable bounce, England’s top order struggled to find rhythm. Jos Buttler, the experienced captain, managed 29 before falling to a mistimed shot in the deep, leaving the visitors reeling at 81 for 5 in the 12th over.

The innings turned around courtesy of Sam Curran’s unbeaten 49, which came off brisk strokes and smart placement. His late flourish, including a burst of boundaries in the final overs, pushed England to a competitive total. Nineteen runs came from the last over bowled by seamer Jacob Duffy, giving the visitors momentum just before the skies opened.
Rain first interrupted play with England at 110 for 5 after 16.2 overs, halting the game for nearly half an hour. Although the innings eventually resumed, the weather returned soon after, this time putting a full stop to the match before New Zealand could even begin their chase.
For New Zealand, Mitchell Santner stood out with a tidy spell of 1 for 20 from four overs, leading a disciplined bowling effort in tricky conditions.
With the first match washed out, both teams will now look ahead to the remaining two fixtures — scheduled again in Christchurch on Monday and in Auckland on Thursday — to decide the short series.
