Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in Lok Sabha, is scheduled to visit Berlin, Germany, from December 15 to 20, 2025, for an Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) event. This journey coincides with the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, which is set to conclude on December 19. The timing has ignited sharp criticism from the BJP, targeting Gandhi for leaving the country while Parliament is in session.

BJP leaders have dubbed Rahul Gandhi the “Leader of Paryatan” (tourism), claiming he favors overseas trips over domestic duties. Union Ministers and BJP spokespersons have labeled him a “part-time politician” who appears to take public service lightly. They contend that Gandhi’s overseas travels, including the current Germany visit, signify a lack of dedication to his role as the Opposition Leader, with assertions that such journeys are used to spread anti-India sentiment rather than for meaningful engagement.

Congress leaders have come to Gandhi’s defense, with Priyanka Gandhi pointing out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi often travels abroad for official matters and questioning the absence of similar scrutiny towards him. They assert that Rahul Gandhi’s trip is legitimate, aimed at fostering global connections and engaging with the Indian diaspora rather than merely being a leisure jaunt.

Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, stated that the BJP’s criticisms are merely a diversion, used to deflect attention from important matters raised by Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged electoral misconduct in Parliament. Congress maintains that instead of criticizing opposition figures for engaging with the diaspora, the government should prioritize addressing domestic issues and upholding parliamentary accountability.

According to the Indian Overseas Congress, Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Berlin is a crucial step in enhancing the party’s global footprint. This event aims to gather Presidents and senior representatives from the IOC across Europe, providing a space to tackle issues affecting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), strengthen the Congress Party, and broaden its ideological outreach on an international scale. The IOC underscores the event's goal of initiating significant dialogue and collaboration with the Indian diaspora, thereby improving political interaction and extending the party’s global network.

Ultimately, Rahul Gandhi’s planned trip underscores the ongoing frictions between BJP and Congress regarding parliamentary responsibilities, international outreach, and political strategies, encapsulating larger discussions about the duties and priorities of elected officials in India.
