Pope Leo XIV Urges Global Prayers for Peace Amid Middle East Tensions

VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo XIV has called on people around the world to pray for peace as tensions and violence continue across Iran and the wider Middle East.

Speaking during his weekly general audience at the Vatican, the pope expressed deep sorrow for civilians who have lost their lives in the ongoing conflicts. He especially remembered innocent children and families affected by the violence.

“Let us continue to pray for peace in Iran and throughout the Middle East, especially for the many civilian victims, including many innocent children,” the pope said. He added that prayers can bring comfort to those suffering and help build hope for the future.

Tribute to Slain Lebanese Priest

The pope’s message came as funeral rites were held in the village of Qlayaa for Father Pierre El-Rahi, a Maronite parish priest who was killed while helping members of his community.

According to local reports, the priest rushed to assist parishioners after their home was reportedly hit by fire from an Israeli tank in southern Lebanon. While helping residents in the mountainous area of his parish, the tank reportedly fired again, seriously injuring him.

Father El-Rahi was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from his wounds.

“A True Shepherd”

During his remarks, Pope Leo XIV noted that the surname “El-Rahi” means “shepherd” in Arabic.

He described the priest as a devoted pastor who remained close to his community even in dangerous circumstances.

“Father Pierre was a true shepherd who always remained beside his people with the love and sacrifice of Jesus the Good Shepherd,” the pope said.

He prayed that the priest’s sacrifice would inspire peace in the country, saying, “May the Lord grant that the blood he shed may be a seed of peace for beloved Lebanon.”

Message of Solidarity for Lebanon

The pope also expressed his solidarity with the people of Lebanon, many of whom continue to face hardship due to ongoing regional conflicts.

“I am close to all the Lebanese people at this moment of grave trial,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly called for an end to hostilities in the Middle East and urged leaders and communities to work toward peace while protecting innocent lives.
