Poland Strengthens Defenses as Deadly Floods Strike Central Europe

Photo : Reuters

Central Europe is grappling with severe flooding following relentless rain, which has led to at least 18 deaths across the region. In Poland's town of Nysa, volunteers and rescue workers are working tirelessly to build flood barriers using sandbags to contain the rising waters. This comes as rivers across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria continue to swell, causing widespread devastation.

The situation is particularly dire along the Czech-Polish border, where rivers, swollen with debris, have ravaged towns. The flooding has caused significant damage, including the collapse of bridges and the destruction of homes. In response, Poland has declared a state of disaster and allocated 1 billion zlotys (approximately AED 954 million) to support flood victims.

On the ground in Nysa, a town of 40,000 residents, volunteers have been instrumental in assisting rescue operations, especially in reinforcing the town's embankments. Overnight efforts included the use of military helicopters to drop sandbags to strengthen the compromised barriers. Despite these efforts, many residents are still grappling with the aftermath and assessing the damage to their homes following mandatory evacuations on Monday.

National fire chief Mariusz Feltynowski, who met with Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Wroclaw, confirmed that the embankment in Nysa has been secured. However, the situation remains critical as floodwaters continue to pose a threat to the region.
