Kathmandu – A tragic plane crash in Nepal on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of 18 people, with only Captain Manish Raj Shakya surviving the incident. The crash occurred shortly after the Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft of Saurya Airlines, bound for Pokhara International Airport, took off from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
According to reports, the plane collided with a container on the airport premises, causing the front part of the cockpit to become lodged in the container while the rest of the aircraft fell to the ground and burst into flames. The impact and subsequent fire led to immediate fatalities, with 15 individuals dying on the spot and three more succumbing to injuries at a local hospital.
Deputy Inspector General Ram Dutt Joshi of the TIA Airport Security Office confirmed that Captain Shakya, the sole survivor, was rescued from the cockpit portion that had been trapped in the container. Shakya, 37, is currently receiving treatment at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC). Although he sustained several internal injuries and broken bones, his condition has shown improvement. Doctors are investigating brain scars detected during his treatment, with further details pending an MRI scan.

The tragedy has prompted a national period of mourning, with the Nepal government ordering the flag to be flown at half-mast in tribute to the victims. A five-member investigation commission, led by Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, former Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), has been established to probe the incident and provide recommendations within 45 days to prevent future occurrences.
Postmortem examinations are underway at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), where the process has been delayed due to severe burns on the victims’ bodies. The hospital has mobilized 25 doctors to expedite the examinations.
Family members and friends of the deceased have expressed concerns about potential negligence. Some relatives allege that technical issues with the aircraft may have been overlooked by both the airline and the civil aviation authorities. Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need to prevent such tragedies and ensure aviation safety.
Since the first recorded air crash in Nepal in August 1955, there have been 914 fatalities in aviation incidents across the country.
