Ferry Sinks Near Basilan, At Least 15 Dead

Manila, Philippines – A passenger ferry operated by Aleson Shipping Lines, M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, sank early Monday (January 26, 2026) while traveling from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu.

The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that at least 15 people have died in the incident. The vessel was carrying around 332 passengers and 27 crew members at the time of the accident.

The ferry encountered technical problems and sank off the coast of Basilan near Baluk-Baluk Island. Survivors reported that the ship may have developed a hole in its hull, allowing water to enter quickly and causing it to sink.

Rescue operations are ongoing, led by the Philippine Coast Guard, navy, local authorities, and nearby fishing boats. More than 200 passengers have been rescued, while several people remain missing. Medical teams are treating injured survivors in local hospitals.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the sinking. The Philippines, an island nation, has a history of ferry accidents due to weather conditions and safety issues. In 2023, a ferry fire killed more than 30 people in the southern Philippines.
