Two major wars, fought 50 years apart, have strongly influenced the relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. These conflicts — the 1973 Yom Kippur War in the Middle East and the Gaza conflict that began in October 2023 — have acted as turning points in the way the two nations view each other and work together.
The 1973 Turning Point
In 1973, Israel fought against Egypt and Syria in what became known as the Yom Kippur War. Israel initially faced heavy setbacks. The war not only reshaped politics in the Middle East but also affected South Asia. At that time, Pakistan, which was facing its own challenges in the region, turned towards Saudi Arabia for support and deeper friendship. This became the beginning of a strong partnership between Islamabad and Riyadh.
For Pakistan, Saudi Arabia was not just a religious ally but also a country with great financial power, thanks to its oil wealth. The Yom Kippur War highlighted the role of Arab unity and showed Pakistan the importance of having Saudi Arabia on its side in international politics.
The 2023 Gaza Conflict
Fifty years later, in 2023, another conflict once again brought Pakistan and Saudi Arabia closer. On October 7, 2023, the Gaza war began after a major attack, leading to months of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations. This war once again shook the Gulf region.
By September 2025, official sources revealed that Saudi Arabia may have reached out to Pakistan after Israeli bombing extended to Qatar. While this detail surprised many observers, what stood out was that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia again found themselves working closely during a crisis, just as they did in the 1970s.
Half a Century of Partnership
Officials explained that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia’s bond is not new. It stretches back at least half a century, marked by trust, shared religious identity, and mutual support in times of war. The partnership is seen not just as a short-term reaction to conflicts but as a deep-rooted alliance.
Over the years, Pakistan has supported Saudi Arabia militarily and diplomatically, while Saudi Arabia has provided Pakistan with oil supplies, financial assistance, and employment opportunities for millions of Pakistani workers.
The two countries also coordinate on larger Muslim world issues, often taking similar stands on Palestine, Afghanistan, and regional security.
Why This Matters Today
The unfolding Gulf situation has once again made Pakistan important for Saudi Arabia. Analysts believe that Riyadh sees Islamabad as a reliable partner in times of crisis, especially when the Gulf is facing uncertainty due to wars and instability.
For Pakistan, Saudi Arabia remains a crucial ally, not only for political and religious reasons but also for its economic support. With Pakistan struggling with debt and inflation, stronger ties with Riyadh could bring financial relief and international backing.
Looking Ahead
As history shows, wars and conflicts have acted as bridges between the two nations. In 1973 it was the Arab-Israel war, and in 2023 it was the Gaza crisis. Half a century apart, both moments proved that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia stand closer when the Muslim world faces challenges.
Observers say that the partnership between the two sides is likely to remain strong in the future, shaped by common interests, mutual respect, and shared struggles.
