While southern Ontario grapples with a significant winter lake-effect snowstorm, Ottawa has mostly evaded the worst snowfall. However, chilling temperatures are on the horizon, set to drop sharply in the coming days.
On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach around 0°C, but as the week unfolds, Environment Canada predicts daytime highs remaining below freezing. By Thursday night, Ottawa could plunge to a frigid -13°C, marking one of the coldest periods of the season thus far.
The already biting cold will be exacerbated by strong winds. Southwest gusts peaking at 50 km/h are anticipated on Sunday, shifting to the northwest with similar speeds after midnight. Although Monday may bring slightly reduced winds, the wind chill could make it feel as cold as -14°C during the early morning, creating additional challenges for outdoor excursions and travel.
Snowfall is also likely over the weekend. Ottawa could see accumulation between 5 and 10 cm by the end of Sunday, though weather conditions remain unpredictable. Areas of eastern Ontario, especially near Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, might experience snow that briefly turns to rain before reverting to snow.
Residents are advised to stay vigilant. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) urge motorists to prepare for rapidly shifting road conditions and to adjust their driving behaviors to maintain safety.
With the bitter cold, fierce winds, and impending snowfall, Ottawa inhabitants are being encouraged to dress warmly, exercise caution when traveling, and keep an eye on local weather updates for any abrupt changes.
