The Wealth of the Humble: Osama Regaah Honors His Parents Through a Humanitarian Initiative as His New Novel Transparent Ghost Launches
In a deeply personal reflection, Sudanese writer and humanitarian Osama Regaah shares an intimate journey into the values that shaped his character—values instilled by two humble parents whose spiritual wealth far exceeded material possessions. As he prepares for the release of his new novel Transparent Ghost, Regaah dedicates this moment to honoring the legacy of his mother and father through a humanitarian initiative rooted in gratitude and remembrance.
Raised in a modest home in Port Sudan, Osama Regaah learned from an early age that true richness is found not in wealth or status, but in integrity, patience, sincerity, and contentment. His father, a man of unwavering dignity, believed that sustenance comes through honest work and that a person’s worth is measured by clean hands and a clear conscience. Each morning, as he opened his small shop in the bustling Port Sudan market, his quiet prayers filled the air with peace and humility, setting the foundation for the family’s simple yet deeply fulfilling life.
Despite limited income, the home radiated a joy that material comfort could not replicate. Through example, not instruction, his father taught him to embrace contentment, to walk among people with humility, and to celebrate the blessings of others without envy.
Equally influential was his mother—a woman of silent greatness. She never complained, judged, or spoke ill of anyone. Her life was guided by pure intention and quiet faith, teaching her children that sincerity is a form of worship and that a loving heart is its own form of abundance. She encouraged them to love life not for its duration but for its purpose, and to love people not for gain but for the purity it brings to the soul.
Whenever life becomes heavy and its roads twist before me, I return in memory to those days. I reach into the pocket of my past, draw out the warmth of their voices and the patience of their hearts, and I am calmed. My parents were simple in everything—except in nobility. They taught us that a “short hand” may lack wealth, but it never lacks generosity. These values later became the emotional foundation behind Transparent Ghost, a work born from the depth of these memories.
The most beautiful memories were those annual trips to “the village”—to Shendi, the ancestral home in Taybah al-Khawad. We spent almost a quarter of the year there, three months immersed in the embrace of relatives, playing in muddy paths, breathing in the scent of rain, and seeing in people’s faces the grandeur of simplicity and the generosity of pure hearts. There were no mansions or cars in the village, yet it possessed something the cities never will: serenity, purity, and a deep sense of belonging.
Today, as I look back, I realize that true wealth was never in gold, trade, or travel—but in a kind of upbringing that forged in us unyielding resolve, unwavering faith, and a conscience that could not be bought. That wealth is what allowed me to stand strong against life’s storms, carrying within me a legacy of values beyond measure—values that breathe through every page of Transparent Ghost.
I write these words to tell the youth standing today at the gates of life, hesitant and afraid of its hardships: Being humble in origin is not a flaw, nor the end of the road. The true flaw is losing faith in yourself and allowing despair to steal your dream. Those born into humble homes are born into the school of perseverance. Those who learn contentment learn resilience. And those who have known scarcity understand the true value of giving when prosperity comes.
Be children of determination, not of circumstance. Walk through life with proud foreheads, kind hearts, and patient souls. Success is not built by wealth—it is forged by willpower and blessed by contentment.
That is what my father and mother taught me, and it is what I shall remain forever indebted to them for.
