OpenAI has commenced the acceptance of applications from external developers that can be directly utilized within ChatGPT. The initiative includes the launch of a new ChatGPT App Directory, accessible from the ChatGPT sidebar or by visiting chatgpt.com/apps. OpenAI emphasizes that this platform should be viewed as a discovery directory for authorized apps, not a conventional store.

With this enhancement, ChatGPT's over 800 million users can rapidly search for and engage with newly authorized third-party applications. After installing an app, users can activate it during their chats by typing its name preceded by the “@” symbol or selecting it from the tools menu, allowing seamless task completion without departing the chat.

The app submission process was officially launched on December 17, as highlighted in OpenAI's blog post and developer communications. Every submission will undergo a review to confirm adherence to OpenAI's public regulations and safety protocols, with compliant apps expected to be accessible to users by early 2026.

To assist developers, OpenAI has announced a public webinar titled “Build Hour”, scheduled for January 21, where OpenAI engineers will offer guidance on app creation, design, and submission while addressing questions from interested developers.

This rollout significantly broadens OpenAI's developer ecosystem beyond its previous limited partnerships. While OpenAI earlier presented a GPT Store, which chiefly featured standard text tools, the new App Directory enables richer interactions with elements like buttons, maps, sliders, and varied display modes. The GPT Store will continue to be operational alongside this new initiative.

Currently, app monetization is restricted. Developers are permitted to direct users to external sites for selling physical products only. Digital items, subscriptions, or in-app services cannot yet be sold, although OpenAI suggests that additional options could be introduced in the future. All apps must comply with strict guidelines, which include having a transparent privacy policy, prohibiting advertisements, and ensuring content is suitable for a general audience, including teenagers.

OpenAI asserts that this transition transforms ChatGPT beyond a simple chatbot. With applications capable of accessing live data, executing tasks, and presenting interactive layouts, ChatGPT is evolving into a pivotal hub for essential tools and workflows. For both developers and users, this represents a significant advancement towards a broader OpenAI developer ecosystem embedded within conversations.
