In Greenville, South Carolina, a police officer was ambushed early Sunday morning while inside his marked patrol vehicle, leading to serious injuries. Authorities described the incident as a targeted attack, triggering an immediate response that culminated in the suspect being fatally shot by sheriff's deputies.
The officer, who was resting in his patrol car when the shooting began, suffered multiple wounds and was swiftly taken to a local hospital. Fortunately, officials reported that the officer is expected to recover and has since been discharged following treatment.
Law enforcement sources indicated the shooting was premeditated, with the assailant opening fire without provocation. It appears the officer was not involved in an active encounter or traffic stop at the time.
Post-attack, a large-scale search for the shooter was launched. Officers located a vehicle connected to the incident, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in a deadly shootout between the suspect and deputies.
In the gunfight, the suspect suffered critical injuries. The county coroner later identified him as David William Lane, 42, from Greenville, who was declared dead on-site after sustaining at least one gunshot wound.
The motive behind this ambush remains unknown, with investigations ongoing to determine if the officer was specifically targeted or if the attack was random. The name of the injured officer has not been released yet.
State investigators are now involved, conducting a thorough review of the events, while local police assure adherence to standards of transparency throughout the inquiry.
This incident has raised concerns throughout the Greenville community, which houses around 70,000 residents about 90 miles northwest of Columbia. Local residents and community leaders have expressed relief at the officer's survival and outrage at the violence.
Officials are urging calm as the investigation progresses and have reassured the public that there is no continuing threat to safety.
