Nvidia's H200 AI Chips Get Chinese Approval, Energizing Tech Sector

China has granted permission for the importation of its inaugural batch of Nvidia’s H200 artificial intelligence chips, heralding a notable change in its approach to advanced foreign technologies. This decision aligns with China’s objective to satisfy its increasing needs for state-of-the-art AI hardware while fortifying its own chip manufacturing sector.

This approval encompasses several hundred thousand H200 units and came to light during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s recent visit to China, as per sources familiar with the proceedings. Due to the sensitive nature of the information, anonymity has been requested by insiders.

The majority of the initial shipments are reportedly earmarked for three prominent Chinese internet giants, with other companies on a waiting list for future deliveries. The specific identities of the approved firms have not been disclosed.

Neither the Chinese authorities in charge of industry and commerce nor Nvidia have publicly addressed this development.

The H200 chip, which ranks as Nvidia’s second most potent AI processor, has been a critical factor in the ongoing technology relations between the U.S. and China. While the U.S. government recently permitted exports of the H200 to China, shipment of these units needed Beijing’s sanction, which had previously posed a challenge.

Just earlier this month, the U.S. allowed Nvidia to market H200 chips to Chinese clients, following a significant uptick in demand. However, Chinese customs had beforehand hindered shipments, citing the absence of authorized approval.

In spite of this ambiguity, Chinese tech firms have submitted orders for over two million H200 chips, significantly surpassing Nvidia’s existing production capabilities.

It remains unclear how many other companies will gain permission in the future or the specific criteria employed by Chinese regulators for granting access.

Nvidia CEO Huang arrived in Shanghai last Friday for the company’s annual events in China and has since made stops in Beijing and various other cities.

This approval indicates that Beijing is emphasizing the needs of large internet enterprises, which are heavily investing in AI data centers to maintain competitive standing on a global scale. While companies like Huawei have developed chips similar to Nvidia’s older H20 model — which was previously the most sophisticated chip permitted entry into China — their performance capabilities are still considerably lagging behind the H200.

The H200 offers approximately six times the performance of the H20, rendering it essential for advanced AI functionality and large-scale computing.
