On Sunday, Kim Jong Un oversaw North Korea's first hypersonic missile test of 2026, emphasizing the regime's determination to bolster its nuclear deterrent.
State media reported that Kim termed the missile launch a vital strategic measure to create a "strong and reliable" nuclear deterrent. Although no specific crisis was mentioned, he associated the move with escalating global tensions.
Military officials confirmed that the missiles traveled around 1,000 kilometers, hitting designated targets off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. This test coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's visit to China, North Korea’s key ally.
In a separate statement, Pyongyang condemned recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela as a breach of national sovereignty. Analysts suspect that this missile test serves as a reaction to these events, signaling a warning to the U.S. and its partners.
Hypersonic missiles are engineered to reach speeds over five times the speed of sound while flying at lower altitudes than traditional ballistic missiles. Experts highlight that their unpredictability in flight paths is a significant advantage, allowing them to bypass missile defense systems.
Analysts suggest that the missiles are likely from the Hwasong-11 series, previously showcased during last year’s military parade. This test reflects North Korea's commitment to swiftly deploy advanced weapon systems.
The development of hypersonic missiles is one of five significant nuclear objectives that Pyongyang outlined in 2021. Recent reports also indicate advancements in nuclear-powered submarines, suggesting broader aspirations to fortify strategic strike capabilities.
Observers note that the timing of this test conveys a strong message before upcoming regional diplomatic meetings, reinforcing North Korea's stance against any renewed talks on denuclearization. Kim Jong Un is anticipated to showcase these developments at the forthcoming ruling party congress, aiming to position North Korea as a fully-fledged nuclear power.
