Blood sugar levels indicate how well your body manages glucose, which is essential for energy, brain function, and overall health. Normal ranges vary slightly by age and testing time, such as fasting or after meals. Understanding these values helps with early detection of prediabetes and diabetes and supports better long-term health decisions.
Blood sugar, or blood glucose, reflects the amount of glucose present in the bloodstream. Levels change throughout the day based on food intake, activity, stress, hormones, and sleep. Tests are typically done in a fasting state or two hours after a meal to assess how effectively insulin regulates glucose.
Fasting blood sugar is measured after at least 8 hours without food and shows baseline glucose control. After-meal blood sugar, usually checked two hours after eating, shows how the body responds to food. Both values together provide a clearer picture of metabolic health.
The following ranges apply to generally healthy individuals without diabetes.
Age group: Children (under 18)
Fasting blood sugar: 70–100 mg/dL
2-hour after-meal blood sugar: below 140 mg/dL
Age group: Adults (18–59)
Fasting blood sugar: 70–99 mg/dL
2-hour after-meal blood sugar: below 140 mg/dL
Age group: Older adults (60+)
Fasting blood sugar: 80–100 mg/dL
2-hour after-meal blood sugar: below 140–150 mg/dL
Slightly higher post-meal levels may be acceptable in older adults due to reduced insulin sensitivity, but consistent elevations require medical review.
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. It is a critical warning stage.
Fasting blood sugar: 100–125 mg/dL
2-hour after-meal blood sugar: 140–199 mg/dL
Lifestyle changes at this stage can often reverse progression.
Diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugar levels remain consistently elevated.
Fasting blood sugar: 126 mg/dL or higher
2-hour after-meal blood sugar: 200 mg/dL or higher
Diagnosis should always be confirmed by a healthcare professional using repeat testing or additional markers.
As people age, muscle mass decreases and insulin sensitivity may decline, making glucose control slightly harder. Hormonal changes, reduced activity, medications, and chronic conditions also affect blood sugar regulation, especially after meals.
High blood sugar symptoms include frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing. Low blood sugar may cause dizziness, sweating, shakiness, confusion, and sudden hunger. Mild changes often go unnoticed, which is why testing matters.
Fasting blood sugar is best checked in the morning before eating. After-meal blood sugar should be measured two hours after the first bite of a meal. Testing at consistent times improves accuracy and trend tracking.
Meals high in refined carbohydrates cause sharper glucose spikes. Fiber, protein, and healthy fats slow glucose absorption. Regular physical activity improves insulin sensitivity, while stress and poor sleep can raise blood sugar even without dietary changes.
Adults should consider testing at least once every one to three years, especially if there is a family history of diabetes, excess weight, or sedentary lifestyle. More frequent testing is advised for those with symptoms or prediabetes.
Normal blood sugar levels depend on timing, age, and overall health. Fasting and after-meal readings together provide the most useful insight. Monitoring trends, not just single values, helps identify issues early and supports long-term metabolic health.
