Nita Ambani, the prominent businesswoman and philanthropist, turned heads at the launch of the Swadesh flagship store in Mumbai on December 5 with a stunning display of traditional Indian fashion. Known for her impeccable style, Nita graced the event in a peacock blue Banarasi saree designed by celebrated fashion designer Manish Malhotra, combining classic elegance with modern opulence. The Swadesh store, an initiative by Reliance Retail, aims to celebrate and preserve India’s rich textile and craft heritage, making Nita’s choice of attire a perfect homage to the country’s artistry.
The saree featured intricate meena motifs woven using the kadhua technique, a revered and labour-intensive method from Banaras that highlights fine silk patterns and the skill of Indian artisans. To complement the exquisite saree, Nita wore a custom polki blouse adorned with miniature paintings of Hindu deities on the buttons, while the back incorporated elements of vintage jewellery, adding a unique and regal touch. Her ensemble celebrated India’s cultural richness, blending heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Jewellery played a pivotal role in enhancing the ethnic look. Nita selected statement earrings from her personal collection, crafted with kundan and polki stones, and wore a matching hath phool, adding grandeur to her attire. Her hair was styled into an elegant bun accented with fresh white flowers, and a red bindi completed the traditional appearance, perfectly harmonizing with the rich hues of the Banarasi saree.
Manish Malhotra praised Nita’s eye for detail and the special collaboration they share. On Instagram, he highlighted the elaborate elements of her outfit, including the kadhua-weaved meena motifs, the custom polki blouse, and the antique 100-year-old kundan polki earrings from her collection. Nita Ambani’s appearance at the Swadesh store launch not only showcased her personal style but also underscored her support for India’s arts, crafts, and cultural heritage, making the event a visual celebration of tradition and modernity.
This iconic look by Nita Ambani sets a benchmark for Indian haute couture, highlighting the artistry of Banarasi silk and traditional jewellery, while drawing attention to Swadesh’s mission of promoting Indian textiles and heritage crafts.
