South Africa is set to benefit from enhanced satellite connectivity as Thuraya, part of Space42, rolls out its next-generation mobile communications satellite, Thuraya-4. This marks a major expansion, making Thuraya’s complete satellite services fully operational in the country. The move is expected to support digital inclusion, improve critical communications, and strengthen infrastructure across multiple sectors.
Thuraya-4 brings robust coverage and high reliability to industries that depend heavily on continuous communication. Energy, mining, maritime, government, and humanitarian operations are expected to see immediate improvements in operational efficiency and safety, particularly in remote or high-risk regions where conventional networks struggle.
The satellite uses advanced L-band technology and a software-defined architecture, allowing dynamic allocation of bandwidth and power. Its intelligent coverage configuration ensures seamless integration with terrestrial networks, maintaining uninterrupted communication even during extreme weather conditions or in isolated locations. This flexibility makes Thuraya-4 ideal for mission-critical applications, including emergency response, industrial operations, and strategic infrastructure management.
Beyond industry applications, Thuraya-4 aligns with South Africa’s broader digital development objectives. By extending connectivity to underserved areas, the satellite supports national initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing access to reliable communication services. The rollout complements ongoing investments in the country’s space and telecommunications infrastructure.
Space42’s expansion into South Africa follows its successes in other African countries. In Zimbabwe, the company has connected over 1,000 schools and 500 clinics, with plans to reach thousands more. In Rwanda, its subsidiary Mira Aerospace achieved the world’s first 5G video call from a High-Altitude Platform Station, demonstrating new ways to extend broadband where traditional networks cannot reach.
Thuraya’s South African services, including broadband via Yahclick, now offer coverage capable of supporting businesses, government operations, and remote communities. These advancements are part of Space42’s Map Africa Initiative, which uses satellite imagery and AI analytics to build detailed base maps supporting infrastructure planning, resource management, and climate-resilient development across the continent.
With Thuraya-4 now operational in South Africa, the country joins other regions benefiting from cutting-edge satellite solutions, ensuring broader digital access, enhanced connectivity, and stronger operational resilience for sectors vital to economic growth.
