Nelly said, “I didn’t know you only supported me because of who I voted for. I thought it was about my work and what I do for my city. This isn’t about politics, it’s about respecting the office of the president. Trump won, and he’s the president now.”
Nelly also made it clear that he wasn’t doing the performance for money. He said, “I’m doing this because it’s an honor. I respect the role of the president. Our soldiers risk their lives for whoever is president, so I can perform for the same reason.”
He was asked if he supports Trump, and Nelly explained that he supports the office of the president, no matter who holds it. He said that people should respect the process of democracy, whether they agree with the results or not.
Nelly is scheduled to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball with country singer Jason Aldean and the Village People. Some people on social media have been criticizing him for performing, especially because the event falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Carrie Underwood, another artist performing, also faced criticism. She said she felt honored to sing "America the Beautiful" at the ceremony and hoped the event could bring the country together.
In the end, Nelly and other performers have said they are focusing on the respect for the office of the president, not personal politics. They believe it is important to participate in national events even if they don’t agree with everything the president does.
