Trans 'Euphoria' Star Says New Passport Incorrectly Lists Her as Male

Hunter Schafer, a well-known transgender actress from the hit HBO series Euphoria, recently shared a shocking experience about her new U.S. passport. Despite selecting "female" while filling out the application, the document she received listed her gender as "male."

Schafer, 26, posted a TikTok video showing the "M" marker on her passport, expressing disbelief. "I was shocked. I just didn’t think this would happen," she said. She also criticized policies set by former President Donald Trump regarding gender identity.

The actress mentioned that she would be traveling abroad soon and was worried about facing problems at the airport because of this mistake. Her previous passport correctly identified her as a female.

Why Did This Happen?

During Trump’s presidency, an executive order was passed that legally recognized only two sexes—male and female—based on a person’s birth certificate. This policy removed the option for people to choose their gender identity on official documents. Before this change, Americans were allowed to self-select their gender for passports and even choose "X" as an option for non-binary individuals. In 2022, the Biden administration introduced this "X" marker for those who did not identify strictly as male or female.

Unfortunately, because Schafer lost her original passport while filming overseas, she had to apply for a new one. Even though she marked "female" on the forms, her replacement passport still listed her as male.

Schafer believes this issue is directly connected to the government's policies. "At first, I thought, 'I’ll believe it when I see it,'" she said. "Today, I saw it."

Real Impact on Transgender People

Schafer pointed out that this is not just a theoretical issue—it is something real that is affecting people, regardless of their background. "No matter how rich, white, pretty, or privileged someone is, this can still happen," she said.

She also shared concerns about being forced to explain her gender to border officers while traveling. "I will probably have to out myself to security officials more often than I’d like. This is unnecessary and uncomfortable."

Schafer transitioned when she was a teenager and updated her gender on legal documents like her driver’s license and passport. However, she never changed the gender marker on her birth certificate, which may have caused this problem.

On Euphoria, Schafer plays Jules Vaughn, a transgender teen navigating love and identity. Her personal experience mirrors the struggles faced by many transgender people today, highlighting the challenges of restrictive legal policies.
