At the recent US-Saudi Investment Forum, Elon Musk painted a bold vision of the future: a world where humans may no longer need to work, and money itself could lose its relevance. Musk, CEO of Tesla and xAI, described a scenario where intelligent machines handle the majority of labour, leaving humans free to pursue activities purely for enjoyment.
“Work will be like a hobby—gardening, playing games, or something you do because you like it,” Musk explained. In his view, the automation of basic and complex tasks will allow people to focus on creative or leisurely pursuits, while AI and robotics manage the heavy lifting. He suggested that as machines continue to improve, the need for traditional employment—and even currency—could fade over time.
Musk’s comments follow his earlier statements on Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, which he predicts will significantly impact daily life within the next two decades. His vision raises questions about how societies might adapt to a future where conventional work is optional, and the traditional economy may be reshaped.
While Musk forecasts a near-utopian outcome, other tech leaders offer a more measured perspective. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that AI will transform the workplace rather than eliminate it. “Everyone’s jobs will be different. Mundane or difficult tasks will become simple, but new kinds of work will emerge,” Huang said, highlighting the role of AI chips in powering cloud platforms and research across major tech companies.
Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai cautioned against overhyping AI’s immediate impact, comparing the current enthusiasm to the early internet boom. He acknowledged both the potential and the risks of overinvestment, pointing out that while AI’s influence is profound, expectations should remain realistic.
Musk’s vision of a world with optional work sparks both excitement and debate. While the timeline remains uncertain, the discussion underscores the rapid pace of AI development and its potential to redefine human life, leisure, and labor.
