At least 21 people were killed after sudden flash floods hit Morocco’s Safi province on Sunday following a spell of extremely heavy rain, authorities confirmed. The coastal province, located around 330 kilometres south of the capital Rabat, witnessed severe flooding in a very short period, catching residents off guard and causing widespread damage. Officials said the floods also injured 32 people, most of whom have since been discharged from hospital after receiving medical care, while a few remain under observation.

According to local officials, the situation worsened rapidly as nearly one hour of intense rainfall was enough to overwhelm drainage systems in Safi city. Water rushed through streets, especially in the old town area, flooding homes, shops, and small businesses. Many residents were forced to escape to safer places as rising water levels entered buildings and destroyed household belongings. Several vehicles were swept away by the fast-moving water, adding to the chaos and damage across the area.

The floods also caused major disruptions to transport, with many roads in Safi and surrounding districts becoming impassable. Authorities closed several routes to ensure public safety, while emergency teams worked to rescue people trapped in flooded areas. Rescue workers, supported by local volunteers, continued rescue operations late into the day, searching affected neighbourhoods and providing assistance to stranded families.

Local authorities said that the sudden nature of the rainfall made it difficult for residents to prepare, as the downpour was far heavier than expected. Emergency services were quickly deployed to manage the crisis, evacuate vulnerable residents, and prevent further loss of life. Officials are now assessing the extent of damage to homes, shops, and public infrastructure, while plans are being made to support families who lost loved ones or property.

The deadly flooding has once again highlighted the risks posed by extreme weather events in the region, particularly in older urban areas with limited drainage capacity. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, follow safety instructions, and avoid flooded roads as weather conditions remain unpredictable. Investigations are also underway to evaluate flood preparedness and improve early warning systems to reduce the impact of similar disasters in the future.

The tragedy has left the Safi community in mourning, as families and neighbours come together to support one another during this difficult time, while recovery efforts continue across the province.
