A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the Aegean Sea off western Türkiye on Monday, causing brief tremors felt in nearby coastal areas. Authorities confirmed no casualties or material damage from the tremor.
According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.99 kilometers, making it relatively shallow and more perceptible to residents in the region. The tremor serves as a reminder of Türkiye’s seismic activity, especially following the catastrophic 6 February 2023 earthquake, which claimed over 50,000 lives, left thousands injured, and caused extensive destruction to infrastructure across multiple provinces.

Experts note that while a 4.8 magnitude quake is considered moderate, shallow earthquakes near populated areas can be felt strongly, although the risk of serious damage is low. AFAD has urged residents to stay alert to aftershocks and follow standard safety precautions.
AFAD officials emphasized, “Although this tremor did not cause damage, Türkiye remains a seismically active region, and continuous preparedness is essential for public safety.”
