The 74th edition of the Miss Universe pageant concluded in Bangkok, Thailand, with Mexico’s Fatima Bosch taking home the coveted crown. Representing India, Manika Vishwakarma reached the Top 30 but was unable to advance further in the competition.
Bosch’s victory adds another chapter to the global celebration of beauty, talent, and poise, highlighting her impressive performance in all rounds of the contest. Her win marks Mexico’s continued presence in the international pageant scene and sets a high benchmark for future contestants.
India’s Legacy at Miss Universe
India has produced three Miss Universe winners over the years, each of whom went on to explore careers in the Hindi film industry. Their journeys reflect the crossover between international pageantry and Indian cinema.
Sushmita Sen: India’s First Miss Universe (1994)
Sushmita Sen made history in 1994 as India’s first Miss Universe. Winning the Miss India title at just 18, she famously edged past Aishwarya Rai in the national contest, a result that continues to spark discussion among pageant enthusiasts. Known for her calm and confident demeanor during the international judging, she set a new standard for Indian representatives on the world stage.
After her win, Sushmita transitioned into films with Mahesh Bhatt’s Dastak (1996), where she portrayed a character loosely based on her public persona. Over the years, she became a prominent figure in Bollywood, starring in commercial hits like Biwi No. 1, Aankhen, Main Hoon Na, and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya.
Lara Dutta: Dominance in 2000
Lara Dutta’s journey began with her Miss Intercontinental title in 1997. By 2000, she had secured both the Miss India crown and the Miss Universe title in Cyprus. Lara impressed judges with one of the highest interview scores in the pageant’s history and a leading score in the swimsuit round.
Her Bollywood debut came in 2003 with Andaaz, starring opposite Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. Lara went on to appear in a mix of commercial and critically acclaimed films, including Kaal, No Entry, Partner, and Don 2, establishing herself as a versatile actor in the industry.
Harnaaz Sandhu: Breaking the Gap in 2021
Harnaaz Sandhu ended India’s long wait for another Miss Universe crown in 2021. Rising through the Miss Chandigarh and Miss Diva pageants, she represented India with poise and elegance on the global stage.
Harnaaz has gradually entered the film industry, opting for a measured approach to acting. She appeared in Bollywood action film Baaghi 4 alongside Tiger Shroff and Sanjay Dutt and has acted in Punjabi films such as Yaaran Diyan Poun Baaran (2023) and Bai Ji Kuttange (2022), balancing her pageant fame with an emerging acting career.
Manika Vishwakarma’s Performance in 2025
India’s 2025 representative, Manika Vishwakarma, captured attention with her confident performances in the swimsuit and evening gown rounds. Her electric blue swimsuit and regal black lehenga were widely praised on social media, earning her admiration from fans despite not advancing beyond the Top 30. Manika continues the tradition of strong Indian contenders on the international stage, and her journey reflects India’s continued presence in global pageantry.
With Fatima Bosch’s win, the 2025 Miss Universe pageant concluded as a celebration of talent, beauty, and cultural diversity. India’s legacy in the competition remains notable through its three former winners, each of whom has made a mark both on the world stage and in Indian cinema. The future looks promising as new entrants continue to uphold the country’s tradition of excellence in international pageantry.
