Mid-flight, a Korean Air plane descends 26,900 feet, forcing its passengers to wear oxygen masks.

A Korean Air flight bound for Taichung International Airport from Seoul's Incheon International Airport encountered a harrowing mid-flight incident when it abruptly lost altitude due to a pressurization system fault. Departing on June 22, 2024, flight KE189, operated by a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, experienced a rapid descent of approximately 26,900 feet within a span of about 15 minutes. Reports indicate that the plane's onboard systems flagged a "pressure system abnormality" while flying over Jeju Island, triggering the deployment of oxygen masks as passengers grappled with hyperventilation and ear discomfort. Witnesses recounted scenes of distress among children and unease among passengers as the aircraft appeared to hover before initiating its descent.

Upon landing in Taichung, Taiwan, 17 passengers received medical evaluation for minor injuries related to the incident but were later discharged. Korean Air promptly issued an apology and assured full cooperation with authorities in investigating the cause of the malfunction. The airline provided support to affected passengers, including accommodation, meals, and alternative transportation arrangements. The flight resumed the following morning with a different aircraft, marking a delay of approximately 19 hours from its original schedule.

A spokesperson for Korean Air underscored ongoing efforts to conduct a thorough investigation into the pressurization system malfunction, aiming to rectify any maintenance issues before returning the aircraft to service. The incident underscores broader concerns over aircraft safety and maintenance, particularly amid heightened scrutiny following previous incidents involving Boeing planes. As investigations continue, both passengers and aviation authorities remain vigilant about ensuring the safety and reliability of commercial air travel.
