Comedian Michelle Buteau recently called out Dave Chappelle for his long history of making jokes about transgender people in her latest Netflix special, Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind. In her performance, Buteau criticized Chappelle's comments, saying that such jokes can cause harm and put people in danger.
The special, which aired on Tuesday, directly addressed Chappelle's past remarks, especially the ones made in his 2021 Netflix special The Closer. Buteau, known for her bold and unapologetic humour, made it clear that comedians don’t need to target marginalized groups to be funny.

Buteau explained that jokes should never put down an entire group of people. She emphasized that comedy should be funny but also responsible. She even urged her audience to pass along a message to Chappelle, suggesting that he might not fully understand the impact of his words.
She said, “We can tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community. We can do that. We can make it funny, we just have to work at it. So if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you tell him that s---? I don’t think he knows that s---.”
Even though Buteau acknowledged Chappelle’s greatness as a comedian, calling him the "GOAT" (Greatest Of All Time), she made it clear that his jokes about the trans community were neither funny nor harmless. She pointed out that it’s dangerous to profit from making people feel unsafe. She told the audience, “Dave, it’s not funny. It’s dangerous. Make it funny.”
Buteau also shared her belief that comedy should be used to make people feel safe, heard, and seen, rather than to harm them. She ended by saying, "I can’t believe someone would make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel unsafe. That is so wild to me. I wanna make millions and millions of dollars by making people feel safe, seen, secure, heard, and entertained. That is my goal."
Dave Chappelle’s controversial comments about the trans community, particularly in The Closer, caused a lot of backlash. Some Netflix employees even staged walkouts and protests over his remarks. Despite the criticism, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended Chappelle, saying that his comedy is an example of artistic freedom.
