Meta has started a new feature for young people on Facebook and Messenger. This new feature is called “Teen Account.” It is made to help keep teens safe while using social media. Meta had already added this feature on Instagram last year. Now, they are bringing it to more apps because many people are worried about how teens use these platforms.

With this new update, boys and girls under 16 will need their parents’ okay before they can go live. Also, if someone sends a private picture that is not right or shows too much skin, the app will blur it so the teen won’t see it clearly. Meta said they will start adding these safety rules slowly in the next few months.
Some leaders in the country are making plans to pass new laws to keep children safe online. One of these laws is called the Kids Online Safety Act. It wants apps to be more careful and help children use the internet in a better way. Many leaders say that apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube should do more to keep children away from bad content.
In the past, many parents, schools, and states have said these apps are too addictive and harmful. In the year 2023, 33 states like California and New York said Meta did not tell people the full truth about the problems their apps can cause.
Last year, two new internet safety laws were accepted by the Senate. These laws want big tech companies to take care of how their apps work with children and teens. Even though another group of leaders did not agree to vote on the laws before, they now say they still want to pass them soon.
Right now, apps like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok let kids who are 13 years or older join. With these new rules, Meta wants to make sure young users are safe and don’t get hurt while spending time on their apps.
