The UK Met Office has officially confirmed that 2025 is the warmest and sunniest year ever recorded in the United Kingdom, based on provisional climate data released this week.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
According to the Met Office, the average annual temperature in 2025 reached 10.09°C, surpassing the previous national record of 10.03°C set in 2022. This milestone places 2025 alongside 2022 and 2023 as the three warmest years in UK climate history.
Notably, 2025 is only the second year on record in which the UK’s mean annual temperature has crossed the 10°C threshold, highlighting the continuing trend of rising temperatures.
Sunshine Levels at an All-Time High
In addition to record heat, the past twelve months were also the sunniest ever recorded across the country. Nationwide sunshine hours reached 1,648.5 hours, exceeding the long-standing record of 1,587.1 hours set in 2003 by 61.4 hours.
Meteorologists say this sustained sunshine had a noticeable impact on weather patterns, agriculture, and water resources throughout the year.
Extreme Weather: Storm Éowyn
While 2025 brought warmth and sunshine, it also witnessed extreme weather events. The year will be remembered for Storm Éowyn, described as one of the most significant windstorms of the century. The storm caused widespread disruption, reinforcing concerns about increasingly volatile weather conditions.
A Changing Climate Signal
Experts note that these records further underline long-term climate shifts affecting the UK, with warmer temperatures and more extreme weather becoming increasingly common.
The Met Office is expected to release its final confirmed data later this year, but early indicators suggest 2025 will remain a landmark year in the UK’s climate records.
