Arsenal staged a comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in an electrifying London derby held at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, thanks to Mikel Merino’s header in the second half. The match was intense and featured a red card for Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo just before halftime after a challenge on Merino, reducing the home team to ten players.
Chelsea initially took advantage, scoring first in the 48th minute with a header from Trevoh Chalobah from a set piece. However, Arsenal leveled the match in the 59th minute when Bukayo Saka delivered a perfectly timed cross to Merino, who converted it with a strong header.
This draw keeps Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City and six points clear of Chelsea, reinforcing their bid for their first Premier League title since 2004.
Both teams exhibited fierce rivalry, resulting in numerous fouls and yellow cards in a particularly combative first half. Arsenal nearly clinched all three points towards the end, but Chelsea's goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made critical saves to thwart attempts from both Saka and Merino.
Chelsea's captain Reece James expressed disappointment at not securing a win, while Merino acknowledged Arsenal’s grit and determination to earn a valuable point in a tough match.
In other Premier League matches on Sunday, Liverpool triumphed 2-0 against West Ham, Manchester United pulled off a 2-1 comeback against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa edged into the top four with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0.
