Chelsea needed a win after losing three games in a row. They played against Southampton, who are at the bottom of the table and will probably get relegated to the Championship next season. Chelsea made sure to win, scoring three goals in the first half. Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Levi Colwill all scored to help Chelsea win 4-0. This was their third win in 11 games.
Before the match, some Chelsea fans protested outside the stadium because they were unhappy with the team's recent form and the rising ticket prices.
Once the match started, Chelsea played much better, and manager Enzo Maresca hoped this would bring back confidence for his players. Nkunku, who has been scoring well this season, got his 14th goal. He headed in a corner kick and later helped Neto score the second goal. Colwill made it 3-0 with a header from a free-kick. Marc Cucurella scored the fourth goal after a good pass from Tyrique George.
Maesca said after the match, "We needed that, the fans needed that, and the club needed that, so we are happy. Our main goal is to get to the Champions League, and we will keep working hard until the end of the season."
With this win, Chelsea moved into 4th place, two points above Manchester City. If English teams keep doing well in Europe, finishing in the top five should be enough to play in the next Champions League.
Aston Villa's dream of playing in the Champions League next season is fading. They lost 4-1 to Crystal Palace. Villa had won against Chelsea in the last match, but this was their sixth loss in their last eight matches. Manager Unai Emery said, "It’s hard to explain the loss today. We have to focus on the FA Cup and Champions League and fix things in the Premier League."
In the match, Ismaila Sarr gave Palace the lead in the first half. Morgan Rogers scored for Villa in the second half, but Palace quickly went back in front with a goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta. Sarr scored again to put the game out of reach, and Eddie Nketiah added another goal for Palace.
With this win, Palace moved up to 12th place, just six points behind Villa, who are in 10th place.
In other matches, Brighton won 2-1 against Bournemouth. Joao Pedro scored a penalty early, and Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert tied the game with a beautiful shot. But Danny Welbeck scored for Brighton to win the match. Brighton and Bournemouth are now tied in points, with Bournemouth in 7th place and Brighton in 8th, just one point behind 5th place Manchester City.
Wolves lost 2-1 to Fulham at home. Fulham scored early with Ryan Sessegnon’s goal in the first minute and Rodrigo Muniz’s goal in the second half. Wolves are still five points above the bottom three in the table.
In the title race, Liverpool can take another step towards their second title in 35 years when they play Newcastle next. Arsenal will also play against Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham will take on Manchester City.
