A massive gathering took place in central Dhaka on Saturday, where hundreds of thousands came together to pay tribute to the esteemed activist Sharif Osman Hadi. His assassination earlier this month has heightened political tensions in Bangladesh as the national elections loom.
Starting early in the morning, mourners flocked to Manik Mia Avenue, near the Parliament area. By the break of dawn, the location was thronged with individuals from diverse backgrounds, some draping themselves in the national flag, while others chanted for justice regarding Hadi's untimely death. The ambience was both poignant and politically charged.
Significant security measures were implemented for the funeral held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. An extensive presence of police officers, many equipped with body cameras, was observed throughout Dhaka, alongside extra personnel from Border Guard Bangladesh and other security forces positioned around key sites, ensuring order. As part of a national day of mourning, the flag was displayed at half-mast across government and private buildings.
The funeral prayers were conducted by Hadi's elder brother, Abu Bakar. Although access to the burial was limited, tens of thousands took part in the janaza prayers. Authorities had earlier specified that the body would not be available for public viewing, restricting attendance at the burial to a select few.
Post prayers, Hadi's body was escorted under heavy security to the Dhaka University campus. Preparations for the burial had been meticulously finalized overnight, with Hadi being laid to rest next to the mausoleum of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet. Police confirmed the burial was executed quietly, adhering to security regulations.
Despite limitations, the attendees expressed their sentiments vocally. Many raised political slogans such as “Dhaka belongs to Dhaka” and pledged that Hadi's death would not go unanswered. Supporters regarded him as a crucial symbol of resistance and an influential figure in Bangladesh’s recent political movements.
Sharif Osman Hadi served as a spokesperson for the Inqilab Moncho cultural platform and emerged as a key leader during the political upheaval that culminated in the end of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure. He was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and subsequently flown to Singapore for critical medical attention. He succumbed to his injuries earlier this week, and his remains were returned to Bangladesh late Friday night.
Authorities have indicated that suspects involved in the shooting have been identified and are suspected to have fled to India, where Sheikh Hasina has sought exile. These allegations have led to diplomatic tensions, with both New Delhi and Dhaka summoning each other's ambassadors in recent days.
The extensive funeral on Saturday unfolded amidst growing political uncertainty, as Bangladesh braces for parliamentary elections slated for February 12. The large turnout spotlighted the profound effect of Hadi’s tragic demise and underscored the prevailing tense atmosphere within the nation.
