As the air quality in Dubai and surrounding areas deteriorates, individuals suffering from respiratory ailments, particularly asthma, face heightened risks. Toxic smog not only affects the general populace but also intensifies symptoms for chronic lung condition sufferers. Dr. Kamal Kishore Pandey, a leading pulmonologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, outlines the health implications and shares practical advice for asthmatics to safeguard their health.

The Threats of Smog and Pollution

Dr. Pandey emphasizes that air pollution is a pressing public health issue. “Smog and air pollutants can lead to severe conditions such as lung cancer, exacerbated asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory infections, strokes, and heart disease,” he articulates. Pollutants can irritate pathways and inflame the lungs, causing symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and discomfort in the chest.

Individuals with asthma or COPD are particularly at risk due to their hypersensitive airways. The World Health Organization estimates that fine particulate matter pollution causes nearly seven million deaths globally each year. In polluted regions such as Delhi, high levels can trigger extensive symptoms and possible hospitalizations for those with chronic respiratory illnesses.

The Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma

Dr. Pandey states that while air pollution doesn’t directly initiate asthma, it can significantly worsen symptoms for those already diagnosed. Pollutants and smog particles can inflame and constrict the airways, leading to hassling symptoms such as wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and eye irritation, which can complicate daily living for asthmatics.

6 Essential Strategies for Asthmatics

To mitigate the effects of air pollution, Dr. Pandey advocates for six critical measures for those with asthma:

Formulate an Emergency Asthma Response Plan – Consult with your physician to understand necessary actions if symptoms escalate.

Customize Your Plan for Everyday Life – Ensure your response plan is appropriate for your workplace, environment, and daily circumstances.

Minimize Outdoor Activity – Limit outdoor presence on days with poor air quality. Check air quality reports before leaving home.

Utilize Protective Masks – Masks can filter out harmful dust, pollutants, and germs. Replace disposable masks as needed, or wash reusable ones frequently.

Maintain Hydration – Pollution can lead to dehydration, which can irritate airway linings. Drink abundant fluids to alleviate symptoms like headaches and nausea.

Boost Immune Health with Nutrition – Incorporate foods rich in vitamin C, magnesium, and omega-3s, such as leafy greens, garlic, ginger, yogurt, and eggs to improve your immune response and mitigate flare-ups.

An Appeal for Vigilance and Action

Dr. Pandey stresses the importance of asthmatics adopting proactive strategies, especially during heightened pollution periods. By following these straightforward yet effective recommendations, individuals can diminish the adverse health impact of smog and enhance lung health. With diligent care, those with asthma can safeguard their health against the escalating effects of air pollution while remaining active and healthy.
