Maharashtra's Data Scientist Wins UK Rail Award

Smital Dhake, a British Indian data scientist hailing from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, achieved recognition at the UK’s RailStaff Awards 2023. Dhake, the inaugural and sole data scientist at Alstom, was honored in the Newcomer of the Year category during a ceremony in Birmingham. Her educational journey began at Watford Grammar School in England and continued at King's College London.

Based at Alstom’s Hatfield office in eastern England, the 26-year-old draws inspiration from her grandparents, fostering a strong work ethic. Dhake aspires to contribute to the development of engineering technologies. Mifaz Miftha, Design Group Manager at Alstom, praised her commitment and accuracy, noting her exceptional problem-solving skills and critical thinking in design.

Dhake's impact extends beyond her role, with a commitment to promoting engineering and sustainability careers. She actively visits schools, particularly inspiring young women to pursue STEM careers. The RailStaff Awards, launched in 2007, acknowledges railway industry professionals, celebrating their contributions.

Joining Alstom’s Digital and Integrated Systems (D&IS) UK signalling business, Dhake worked on the innovative Modular Advanced Route Setting (M-ARS) system at its Hertfordshire base. This groundbreaking system, utilizing machine learning techniques, analyzes real-time data to predict future events, facilitating quicker decision-making for conflict resolution in train movements and enhancing railway efficiency.

Alstom's M-ARS system, currently undergoing Network Rail product approval, is poised for delivery in several high-profile rail projects upon approval. Dhake's instrumental role in the approval process underscores her significance in advancing innovation within the railway industry. Her achievements highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, inspiring the next generation of professionals.
